How to Clean Your Wood Deck the Right Way

A wood deck is a place to relax, spend time with family, or entertain friends. To enjoy your wood deck all year around it is important to keep your deck looking like new with maintenance throughout the year.

Regular upkeep will ensure it is healthy and safe. Sweep leaves and debris off your deck often to prevent stains and mildew. While you’re sweeping, keep an eye out for loose boards, wobbly rails, or nails and screws.

Simply tighten loose screws or replace them, hammer nail-heads down, or replace damaged boards as soon as you find any problem. Use a professional wood deck cleaner to remove algae, mold and other stains from your deck.

Steps to Cleaning a Wood Deck

Most wood decks require annual maintenance which is required if you want to keep it looking good and performing well. Follow these steps for a healthy deck:

Give it a Good Sweeping

Over time, the finish on a wooden deck breaks down. Sun and weather naturally age the boards. Water penetrates into the wood which gives a plenty of room for mold and mildew to grow and lead to rotting. A thorough annual cleaning and application of a wood deck cleaner will preserve the beauty of your deck and make it last longer. To get started, take all the furniture and flower pots off the deck and sweep it to remove leaves and dirt.

Remove All Furniture and Debris

Cleaning solutions or pressure washers can damage your deck furniture, and excessive trash littering the deck will make washing ineffective. Bring any patio chairs, grills, flower pots, and any other items indoors or on the grass while you clean. Carry a trash bag with you, and pick up any garbage or yard waste as you go. Check in-between plank slats for hard-to-reach debris.

Apply Wood Deck Cleaner

Next, use a standard deck cleaner to remove stains. Make sure to follow the directions as mentioned in cleaner’s guidelines. Cover plants growing by the deck before you start cleaning. Use a garden pump sprayer to apply the cleaner and allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes without drying. Scrub and rinse thoroughly. Your deck does not need to be completely dry. However, it should not have any standing water.

Seal the Deck

Sealers protect your deck by blocking ultra-violet light and helping to prevent mold and mildew from forming on the wood. Before applying the sealer, lightly sand the deck. This will remove any loose pieces of dirt caused by washing. Next, apply the sealer by using a roller to cover three or four boards at a time. Allow the sealer to dry completely before moving furniture or flowerpots back onto the deck.
